Preface

This textbook represents a first course in optoelectronic materials and devices suitable for a half- or one-semester semester course at the undergraduate level in electrical engineering, engineering physics, and materials science and engineering departments. It can also be used at the graduate level as an introductory course by including some of the selected topics in the CD-ROM. Normally, the students would not have covered Maxwell's equations. Although Maxwell's equations are mentioned in the text to alert the students they are not used in developing the principles. It is assumed that the students would have taken a basic first- or second-year physics course, with modern physics, and would have seen rudimentary concepts in geometrical optics, interference, and diffraction, but not Fresnel's equations and concepts, such as group velocity and group index. Typically, an optoelectronics course would either be given after a semiconductor devices course or concurrently. Students would have been exposed to elementary quantum mechanical concepts, perhaps in conjunction with a basic semiconductor science course.

I tried to keep the general treatment and various proofs at a semiquantitative level without going into detailed physics. Most topics are initially introduced through intuitive explanations to allow the concept to be grasped first before any mathematical development. The mathematical level is assumed to include vectors, complex numbers, and partial differentiation, but excludes Fourier transforms. On the one hand, we are required to cover as much as possible and, on the other hand, professional engineering accreditation requires students to solve numerical problems and carry out "design calculations." In preparing the text, I tried to satisfy engineering degree accreditation requirements in as much breadth as possible. Obviously one cannot solve numerical problems, carry out design calculations, and derive each equation at the same time without expanding the size of the text to an unacceptable level. I have missed many topics but I have also covered many; though, undoubtedly, my own biased selection.

The book has a CD-ROM that contains the figures as large color diagrams in a common portable document format (PDF). They can be printed on nearly any color printer to make overhead projector transparencies for the instructor and class-ready notes for the students so they do not have to draw the diagrams during the lectures. The diagrams have been also put into PowerPoint for directly delivering the lecture material from a computer. In addition, there are numerous selected topics and other educational features on the CD-ROM that follows a web-format. Both instructors and students will find the selected topics very useful. These selected topics have been prepared by various authors and specialists in optoelectronics as stand-alone chapters, and they cover a wide range of topics. Although some of these topics are treated at the graduate level and review a particular area, there are also numerous selected topics at the elementary level for undergraduate students. In addition, some of these topics appear as color reprints of interesting articles taken, with permission, from various educational journals such as Physics Today, Physics World, IEEE Spectrum, American Journal of Physics, Laser Focus, Photonics, and various other magazines and journals.

A number of colleagues took time to read portions of the manuscripts and provided many useful suggestions that made this a better book. My special thanks go to Professor Charbel Tannous (Brest University, France) and Dr. Yann Boucher (RESO Laboratory, Ecole Nationale d'Ingenieurs de Brest, France), both of whom kept challenging me with their incisive criticisms and dedication to accuracy. About the Author

SAFA KASAP is currently a Professor of Electronic Materials and Devices in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He obtained the B.S.E.E. (1976), M.S. (1978), and Ph.D. (1983) degrees from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, specializing in amorphous semiconductors and optoelectronics. In 1996 he was awarded the D.Sc. (Engineering) degree from London University for his research contributions to materials science in electrical engineering. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Materials. His research interests are in amorphous semiconductors, noise in electronic devices, photoconductors, photodetectors, X-ray image detectors, laser-induced transient photocnductivity and related topics, with more than 100 refereed journal publications in these areas.

This book is very well written material about an horrific series of unimaginable violent crimes against young women. What Mr. Kolker does is put a real face on those poor girls who were used and disposed of so dispicably by a killer yet uncaught. He gave us a look at the lives and circumstances that led each girl down their path to become a professional in a high-risk industry. We see that they are real people who had beautiful attributes, flaws that tripped them up, just as we all do. Every "sex worker " is merely a person in a very stigmatized profession and Mr. Kolker does not allow that aspect to color his writing any more than necessary.The book is paced out well and does not grow wearisome, as some non - fiction can. I was engrossed in the details of this book. It really hit me emotionally. It brought out horror, pity, righteous anger, bafflement, and sorrow. I hoped for an ending like the movies, but reality only gives enough answers to invite further questions, it seems.I sincerely appreciate the care which the author took to humanize the girls, be very detailed and give an unbiased view of the events and people. I think that this is a great tribute to all of these poor, lost souls.I hope they catch who did the killing and for peace for the loved ones left behind in the wake of such atrocities. I recommend this book and thank the author.

For me this clarified a lot of the issues around this case. The news articles and investigation series really provided snippets and did not give a clear timeline of the murders.It is sad that these young women lost their lives in the way they did. Some reviewers pointed out that these women chose this life, which is true. However, given their circumstances they did not have lots of options. The lure of the money got them into the life and kept them there. Minimum wage jobs provide enough to live paycheck to paycheck. They were drawn in by the promise to earn more in a night than they could earn in almost a month at a minimum wage job. Based on Mr Kolker's research, none of these women went into the life expecting to become stuck. They each seemed to have plans for futures and expected they could bankroll their dreams from their earnings. It also appeared that they either did not have access to other resources or information to help them with other options. They also lacked strong support systems in their personal relationships to help them.There are others that may point out that other people have succeeded under worse circumstances. That is true to a point but no one does it alone and these women did not seem to have some crucial intervention that may have given them hope for others choices.There were also mention of lack of detail on the police investigation. That may be the result of the police protecting information that would be critical in weeding out potential suspects or providing certain details to the killer that could help him avoid detection. Many police departments have policies restricting what can be discussed even with victims' families to protect the integrity of the investigation.The book was excellent in showing the ease with which such a killer can gain access to victims in our modern age. It is frightening to think a victim is a mouse click away from such a fate. It is horrific that bipedal monsters exist that seek pleasure in causing so much misery to victims and their families.The book also revealed the insular attitude of the Oak Beach community and how these crimes galvanized certain factions. It was disheartening that some residents saw the media coverage as an opportunity to air dirty laundry and point fingers.I have read that there is someone charged in the cases of Jessica Taylor and victims that were dissected. The authorities are still treating the five cases from Oak Beach as a separate killer.I know police keep theorizing that Shannan drowned. Have they considered that the killer may have broke pattern because he did not have time to perform his usual routine because of the attention she drew with her near escape? That could explain why the clothes and body were not dumped together and she was at a different location.The reason I gave this book five stars is because of the questions it raises rather than the ones it answers. How does society handle an already risky "profession" in the digital age? It asks us to examine our values when we marginalize curtains members of our society when their choices fall outside the accepted norm. What can we offer young people to improve their chances as adults when they lack strong support at home? It raises questions about how police handle missing persons report for adults, especially people with marginalized status. Many departments are short staffed and in some of these cases the women were known to remain out of contact for days at a time. The police are pushed to prioritize. That is not meant to disparage the value of these womens' lives but it is a harsh reality.

I found the writers insights on each of the character's in this horrific true mystery concise.Considering all the rumors and conspiracy surrounding this sad tale. I was able to find my way around the many discrepancies and chaos. Indeed it seemed a few were looking for their moment of fame. Then the others that wished this all went away. So if you continue to read and are 'well read' should understand that pointing fingers isn't a solution. Rather ignoring it is the problem. As well as this being the oldest yet extremely dangerous profession. The Internet has only facilitated it yet is a given...indeed a perilous life. No matter how street savvy these girls can be danger lurks in the darkness they so walk. Hope this book open young women eyes that think of this as a fast way to make cash. The lack of both humanity and, indifference towards these young girls is exactly the reason they go unnoticed. The fact is we still have an intelligent sadistic maniac - walking, working amongst us yet he only targets prostitute's so most - the world could care less...is what bothers me most.

I am an avid reader of murder mysteries. I don't know why I prefer this genre over others. I will leave that question to the social sciences. As books go, this one is well constructed, readable, and all the commas are in the right place. But It's a downer. And because it's a downer, I think it's good for people like me to read. It's good to be reminded that real people end up subject to brutality. It's good to be confronted with evidence that our culture does not, in fact, regard all human life as equally worthy. It's good to be compelled to acknowledge that violent crime leaves more than just the victim in pieces: It tears families apart, it leaves loved ones sick with guilt over wondering how they could have prevented it, it turns friendly--or at least civil--neighbors into beasts snarling at one another, straining at the chains of restraint or wisdom, wanting only to tear into one another. Finally, it is sobering to learn that in the real life versions of stories that I read for entertainment, seldom do grim-jawed heroes come bursting through the door at the last second, to save the innocent and bring the evildoers to justice. Lost Girls left me immensely sad because of its truth, I'm thinking of switching to comic books for awhile.

About the Author
Tove Jansson (1914–2001) was born in Helsinki and spent much of her life in Finland. She is the author of the Moomin books, including Comet in Moominland and Finn Family Moomintroll. Born into an artistic family—her father was a sculptor and her mother was a graphic designer and illustrator—Jansson studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, and L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In addition to her Moomin books, she also wrote several novels, drew comic strips and worked as a painter and illustrator. In 1966, she was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for her body of work. Jansson had a studio in Helsinki but spent most of her time at her home on a small island called Klovharu.
